About the Course

This is a 3-weeks long practical-intensive residential course set in the Northwestern United States.  Starting on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in the northwestern U.S.A., we will make a three-week transect to the Pacific coast, covering more than 3500 km, and visiting a range of landscapes from glaciated alpine terrain, to loess plateaus, to sand dunes and deserts, and to coastlines.

Dates: 23 June – 17 July, 2020

Location: Northwestern United States

Start: Bozeman, Montana

End: Portland, Oregon

Where will you visit

You will visit spectacular landscapes such as the Great Plains, Tobacco Root Mountains, Bitterroot Range, Lost Horse Valley, Blue Mountains, Eliot Glacier and more, to study the structure and dynamic processes of coastal zones, mountain glaciers, deserts and loess landforms.

What will you see

You will also meet local experts from NGOs and institutions such as the Indiana University Geologic Field Station and the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory. It will be a good news to you if you're interested in fossils as you will visit the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, one of the most important locations in North America where Neogene plants and animals have been discovered.

Registration

This course is open to HKU undergraduates going to their 3rd or 4th year,  but preference will be given to Earth System Science Majors.

No special equipment required.

Cost: HKD 1000 plus travel airfare to course start/end points for students of Faculty of Science and who are not already taking advantage of  “Funding for Enhancing Undergraduate Overseas/Mainland Experiential Learning Activities” for a different experiential learning activity. *Costs for all other students can be detailed upon request.
